Hello from St. John

Hi everyone! Just a quick note from St. John. The island is beautiful, we have been to the beach every day, I think my daughter is a fish! Yesterday was a rainy day but still managed to be in the water most of the day.
The place we are staying at is so nice! There are two out buildings built around the pool and the main house which has three bedrooms in it. We did a little gardening yesterday, you can only pull weeds after it rains otherwise you have to use a pick axe! The house is build on a hill overlooking Chocolate Bay(Kathleen would know where that is). Today we are going to Trunk Bay.
We lucked out, the flight was short here, only 3 hours 18 minutes!
FYI, the cat was found at the neighbors house under the porch, 8 lives now! Hope all is well and hope everyone had a great Christmas. I will post again soon.

Week 11

The week of our Christmas party! It was hosted by Kathleen with an appetizer theme. She had a fire going in her fireplace that has never had a fire in it before, music and great food!

Food

  • Kathleen had some homemade cranberry vodka, served up a tasty drink. She also made some sauteed mushrooms over toast, Swedish meatballs and an awesome chocolate torte!
  • Margi brought spinach balls, one of my favorites.
  • Lisa brought small pastry shells filled with sauteed onions and brie cheese.
  • JoAnn brought a beautiful roasted veggie torte with goat cheese on the top, looked to pretty to eat, but no one had a problem digging in!
  • I brought some homemade humus, guacamole and olives.
  • Plenty of wine, persecco, scotch, vodka to drink. The hit was the cranberry vodka drink Kathleen made which she needs to post what was in it.

Knit Projects

  • Lisa finished a hat she made for a gift, still working on her sweater.
  • Margi was pumping out Moebius scarves, stated she has made 15 so far.
  • Kathleen was also working on Moebius scarves, same as me.
  • JoAnn was almost done with her smoke ring.
  • We pretty much did not knit anything.

Topics Talked About

  • The holidays

  • JoAnn was not here for this meeting.
  • Margi suggested washing the scarves, hers were all soft, there is a big difference in the feel!

Knitted Tree Topper

This is ambitious for a tree topper or a gift. Not to mention I do not enjoy working on double pointed needles. If you feel the need to try it out, the patter is here.

Post to Members... Please reply!

Do we want to do a Yankee Gift Swap for our Christmas Party? Limit $5-10?

Cookie Tin

Margi......I think I left the tin of cookies at your home from last weeks meeting, I hope you are eating them!

Turtle pattern

This is so cute! I am going to keep this Turtle pattern for a future gift project!

Wednesday, December 9, 2009

How cute is this hot water bottle cover! Something completely unique, I know Margi was making one but have not seen it yet!

My daughter would love this Fiesta Knit Tea set! I certainly would not have to worry about her breaking my real Fiesta.

Week 10

Food

  • It was a BIG week for food! Kathleen brought a dip that Lisa thought it was my humus. It looked like it but was not, it had blue cheese in it which Lisa does not care for. She did not say anything until later in the meeting where she commented about how she wants to like blue cheese tries it but cannot seem to like it. Same for beets with her. Oh well, more dip for us!
  • JoAnn brought a cheddar cheese with cranberries, very tasty!
  • Lisa brought some shrimp cocktail, with some Tequila Lime cocktail sauce which we all seemed to enjoy!
  • I brought some cookies from the Haddam Junior Women's League cookie swap, many I had not tried yet.
  • The wine was Ravens Wood Pinot, very good and always a good choice.

Knit Projects

  • Forgot my camera so I missed out on taking some pictures of Margi's three finished stockings, they looked outstanding especially the green one with the crystals on it!
  • Moebius was the topic again. This time Margi had taken the class at YDU and made two true Moebius scarfs that has the 180 degree turn, very clean looking and will get a picture for next week. In case you wanted to know, here is the Moebius Cast video to make the scarf. Here are also a few Moebius Scarf patterns to try if you are ambitious.
  • I finished another Celtic scarf, orange and gave it to my sister-in-law for a birthday gift. I started the vented sweater in green.
  • Kathleen was trying a pattern which she seemed to be have some difficulty casting on according to the directions, I told her to bag it but she will be going back to the yarn shop and ask them....."What the #*^k are these directions stating????" I swear our trash mouths come out and Lisa has instigated it. With affection of course!!!! Kathleen did add a very sweet felted flower pin to her bag shown to the right, from Etsy , one of our favorite shopping sites!
  • JoAnn was working on a sweater project that was a very neat design, picture is worth a thousand words here because I cannot describe what it looks like! When it is done, you will understand!

Topics Talked About

  • Obama's speech and how it effected people we know
  • Kathleen went on another job interview with the same place, not sure what will happen but seems to be no pressure on her to get it or not! ow nice is that!
  • How can you not talk about Tiger.....who is not out of the Woods yet!
  • For the NYY topics, Bryan Bruney was traded to the Nationals for a player to be named later.
  • Kathleen brought the Sports Illustrated Derek Jeter issue, my daughter scooped it up and looked at all of the pictures, telling me there were a lot of stories in it about him.
  • We decided upon our Christmas party plans, to be held at Kathleen's house with appetizers to be done.

Week 9

Food

  • Wine via Lisa, Veo which was liked by all. She purchased it at Sam's Club liquor store, $6.99 a bottle! Can't beat that!
  • Lisa also brought the cream cheese and pepper jelly, one of my favorites!

Knit Projects

  • Kathleen finished her felted bag, very cool! Picture shown on right. She also sported her vented sweater, which almost all of us has made, JoAnn and myself have to do one, on my list.
  • Margi was as always a knitting machine! She was working on the Moebius scarf that had reverse cables and she finished two moebius scarfes that were both very cool. JoAnn is sporting one of them to the right. Stocking were not done yet so maybe next week.
  • Lisa was working on the next phase of her vented sweater.
  • I was sewing up the Einstein sweater and was debating on the next sweater, might be a gift and something quick.
  • JoAnn finished her shawl, very cool and great color! She was also working on her Musk Ox smoke ring.

Topics talked About

  • Derek Jeter was named Sportman of the Year by Sports Illustrated.....no surprise to us!
  • Showed off my daughter's birthday present which was a NYY photo blanket, cane be seen at www.lifeislikechampagneblog.com
  • Weslyan Potters has their show on right now, Kathleen went and raved about the nice handmade items they had. I would love to take a trip to check it out!
  • Briefed everyone on the bast BOE election and the mishaps done during the election by certain party officials.
  • We set a date for our holiday dinner party, Kathleen will be hosting it on the 21st of December, dinner at her house!
  • Talked more about Moebius patterns, how to, videos and how YDU has another class set up with a waiting list on it. Popular pattern!

Pictures will be added later.

Week 8

A late and short posting due to the holiday and birthday party!

Food

  • Kath brought marinated broccoli and Sabra pepper humus with her own pita chips she made. Lisa called her an a$%hole for making her own chips.....out of love of course!
  • Wine......no wined about anything. Wait....we did have wine, just cannot remember what it was!!!

Knit Projects

  • Margi had her last stocking made, just wanted to add some gem stones to the tree design on it. I plan on taking pictures of all three!
  • Kathleen still working on Einstein sweater, Celtic scarves and making a felted bag as a gift. Hoping to get pictures of all this coming meeting!
  • JoAnn's smoke ring project is coming out soooo beautiful! She will be able to wear it out on the town......even if she decides to vacation in Siberia!
  • Lisa....well I caught a glimpse of Margi doing some rip out on her sweater, didn't ask!
  • Myself....I have to finish my Einstein sweater and make about 4 more of the Celtic scarves. I had better get going on them!

Topics Talked About

  • Baseball withdrawal
  • My plans for my daughter's birthday party, her "Derek Jeter" theme she wants.
  • the "60 Minutes" episode about the right of death, that was a HOT topic since we have a few of us in the medical field in the group.
  • Kathleen going for another job interview and really considering taking it if offered.
  • A little politics since we have some drama with the Board of Education seat up for another election.

I will be better posting for this week, hopefully tomorrow!

More on Moebius

Interweave has a moebuis pattern that looks very nice to try. Amazing how once something is shown on Oprah, it becomes a hit! So.....since Oprah is leaving, who will take that over???

Moebius Scarf Class

Yarns Down Under is having a Moebius Scarf Class for ideas on a quick knit gift. Since we were just talking about this type of pattern, I thought I would post their picture and info.

Week 7

Food

  • Lisa brought a corn salsa from Whole Foods that was very good and had a lot of garlic in it!
  • Kath brought an appetizer of blue cheese whipped with marscapone cheese in a sandwich like appearance with fig in between. It was soooo good!
  • Pepperwood Pinot Noir was the wine, a favorite of the group.
  • Margi had some mini muffins, pumpkin or ginger, cannot remember which.

Knit Projects

  • Lisa brought in her finished felted bag(picture shown on right) and was just finishing up her back panel for her current project shown here. Looking good!
  • Kath had finished up three of the Celtic scarfs(picture shown to the right before being blocked) in very cool colors! We talked about the button holes, I changed the size of my button hole to only one yarn over, she felt hers were o.k.. I also changed the cast on end to have a short rib for a better finished look, and put the buttons on an angle for a more fashion finish. Picture shown to the right of my finished project. Kath is still working on the Einstein sweater, sleeves still in progress.
  • Margi is cranking out another stocking and we decided we will post the picture next week with all three. She is also going to try the Celtic scarf, can't wait to see how hers looks and what modifications she makes, if any.
  • JoAnn was working on a project which I forgot to ask about. But what was cool was she had a little show and tell. She had purchased some Musk Ox yarn, very fine but super warm since they can be in temperatures of up to 40 below! I posted a picture of the project she is doing and the yarn with it.
  • I am working still on the Einstein sweater with doing the Celtic scarfs for Christmas presents. Maybe sometime I will be able to start a sweater for myself.......maybe.

Topics Talked About

  • Smoke ring patterns, cowls, head scarves, mobious scarves...all discussed and what was popular in the 70's is back now.
  • Baseball withdrawal, we have it and will continue until spring training. I think I am going to find a countdown counter for this site to keep track of the days left until spring training.
  • Explained about the election results in my town and the controversy going on, want more info on it, click here.
  • Margi had a nice table wreath made by her husband, all of us were impressed with it and liked the idea.
  • Discussed the Sara Palin interview about her new book.
  • Foreign adoptions of older children was a hot topic. The summary of it was when you are adopting from a foreign country, some are better than others but you will most likely not get all of the medical history and information needed for issues that may arise.

Did I miss anything? I have to start posting on Tuesdays to ensure I am not forgetting the topics!

Tuesday, November 10, 2009

Week 6

Food

  • Lisa brought some spinach dip and two bottles of red wine made the table tonight! I brought coffee with me knowing it was going to be a long night with a nursery school meeting right after knitting.

Knit Projects

  • Lisa was finishing up her hat and still working on the vented sweater.
  • Margi finished the cords for hanging up her stockings, washed and blocked they look awesome! I will hopefully have my camera next week and take a picture of the final products. She was starting up another in green, we all loved the color while she had mixed emotions on it. Her plan was to make a Christmas tree on it using jewels as the ornaments, very creative! She also finished another hat, amazing how she can pump out these items!
  • Kath was still working on the Einstein sweater working with the sleeve that she started last week using circulars. She is getting short on yarn so a fear of running out is there. She also made these super cute neck warmers with cables, we all grabbed a copy of that!
  • JoAnn was working on the shawl, she also had a new bag of yarn and I forgot to ask her what she brought!
  • Margi's friend Maureen stopped by and was making a hat, she said it was a way to transition her back in to knitting. You mean you don't have 5 projects going at the same time????

Topics Talked About

  • First and foremost was the NYY parade. Lisa's son went to it and her friend who is a Red Sox fan. All I got out of her is that her friend said it was scary! My comment was that they reported the people were at least 25 deep lining the streets. Both Kath and I watched it on TV, agreed A-Rod's hat was goofy.
  • Spoke briefly about my election and how it was a great night.
  • Jodi Rell announced that she was not running for Governor of CT again, health more likely the reason.
  • Spoke a little about candy in school, specifically in nursery school and why there should be no reason to have it there. Seems to me everyone is on the same page where less sugar being given, chocking on hard candy and healthy eating habits.
  • H1N1 a topic, asked if my daughter was being vaccinated and I am hopefully getting in for Thursday night.
  • Kath had an interesting job interview which sounded like the people were foaming at the mouth to get her in there! Did not sound too much fun for her and not suitable for what she wants to do now in her life. She can afford to be picky.

Friday, November 6, 2009

Week 5

Food
  • I brought some homemade hummus with roasted garlic, not bad. Seems to come out different every time I make it but the consistency of this one was good, not too thick.

Knit Projects

  • Margi of course finished both stockings, picture inserted on left. They were outstanding and each had their own unique pattern with one having a Red Sox theme. She also finished a neat neck warmer scarf which kath is modeling on the right.
  • Lisa started and looked like she was almost finished with a hat pattern that gift, she is also still working on her vented sweater. Lover her yarn for this, picture inserted on the right.
  • JoAnn is still working on her shawl and has started another project, remind me what it was JoAnn!
  • Kath is finishing up the Einstein sweater, she is on the sleeves which we both commented that it was a bizarre way to seem the top of the shoulder rather than underneath hiding it. She started to attempt to put it on a circular needle, had to rip out after forgetting to alternate knit and purl rows, tricky! The top of the shoulder is the only seem area on this sweater which is nice for finishing.
  • Myself, finished the Einstein sweater for my daughter and working on the other on for a gift. I am trying to pick out a sweater for myself with all of the yarn I have. Found a pattern but might be short on the yarn.

Topics Talked About

  • No surprise we ripped apart the Yankee line up and questioned if this was going to be the winning night. We had good reason to be weary but as we all know, they won in the place they should have won which was at home in the new stadium with Andy as the pitcher. Kath and I would have gone to the parade if it was on Monday, but being held today at 11am, I think I will just watch it on TV.
  • The other major topic we talked about was the image on women. Starting out in grade school to high school, women are automatically put in this image of having to have looks, material items and status. One mistake made seems to carry into your life, and how it does not seem to do this for men. We all agreed we would never want to go back to high school, and what was hard then seems to be even harder now. Building self esteem, values and communication. There is no easy fix and the topic will always come up as a "how" and "why".
  • I know I missed some topics due to the time line. Please post what I missed!

Will post our meeting and pictures either this afternoon or tomorrow morning!

Week 4

This week we had knit class but we did not meet at Margi's and knit. Instead we were invited to Deb's home/Woolie Bullies business to take home any projects we had left there and some yarn by her mother and sister.
Having arrived there early, I walked around Deb's gardens taking some pictures. She loved to work in her garden and what was vibrant right now were her trees. All of us had this in common with her and had shared plants with each other from time to time.
It was nice to look at her place one last time, and see some of her sweaters she had designed and still there. Her mother showed us a picture book of some of the sweaters she designed and many if not all we recognized. Deb was very talented. I think I may try to get some pictures of the sweaters from everyone and post them here.
We left about 7:10pm, I went home and the rest of the crew went back to Margi's to meet for a few minutes. Next week we will update all of our work, I am sure Margi finished all her stockings and then some!

Week 3

Food

It was all about bread this week! Did we have a meal plan set from the previous week?

  • Lisa came with stuffed breads of potato, cheese and sausage. Very good!
  • Kath brought a lemon cake, recipe by Williams Sonoma. Anything lemon is her favorite and this cake was soooooo lemony, yum!
  • Wine was brought by Margi's guest Maureen. I am doing a horrible job with the wine and remembering what was brought. I might have to start writing it down.

Knit Projects

  • JoAnn is cruising right along on her shawl.
  • Margi puts us all to shame! I forgot to bring the camera and she has already blown by her stocking project as shown on this blog, started another one, finished a hat and started another! She posed the question to all of us if her stocking foot was long enough as done by her directions. We all felt it was proportionally just fine. Who was giving her that notion it was not? Her husband told her she needed to make it longer. Denied, rejected and opposed by all in the group. The hats she made were the campus hat design that allowed a pony tail to come out of the top. I modeled it again for everyone since my hair was up, very cute. Pictures next week.
  • Lisa is back and working on her sweater with the yarn I love!!! She is not to keen on me taking a picture of it, worried about her progress but to me she has made great strides on this sweater and I predict will be done in record time....for Lisa that is!
  • Kathleen is working on her Einstein Sweater project, chocolate brown, many skeins involved, two per panel as she stated. Looking good and working up fast. She brought in two other sets of yarn she plans on using for projects. One is a felted bag we all did several months ago, a mohair with deep purple and some pink splashed in it and adding the purple and pink as the main part of the bag, gift for her niece. The other is a black sweater, the one Lisa is working on. Her issue is she does not have enough black mohair and it is probably 6 plus years old. Kath has evidently asked several people at sit-n-knit and us how she can make it work and we all seem to have come to the answer she does not want to get. Need more mohair! So Margi is on a mission to match it.
  • Me....I did not attach the buttons yet, will do it this week and I am 3/4 done with the Einstein Sweater for my daughter. I plan on having this done by next week, with buttons attached!
  • Maureen, Margi's guest who she had worked with brought an unfinished project she had found. We all have that situation going.

Topics Talked About

  • Walking in to Margi's house, the ALCS game NYY vs. Angels game was on, this of course consumed Kath, Lisa and myself. As much as I complained that the game was on at 4pm on a Monday, it was very cool to watch it together. This just confirms to me that we need to go to a game next year. Much of the talk was about Saturday night's game, I went with m husband and stayed for the whole game. Lisa said she fell asleep by 11:30pm that night and had no idea who won.
  • Maureen confessed she is a Red Sox fan, but not an obsessed one. We confessed we are obsessed Yankee fans, I think she saw that in full effect.
  • JoAnn sounds like she will be going to the Stitches East held in Hartford this weekend.
  • Lisa recaped her college tour she took, showing her son a few colleges from R.I. to New York, all seem to be priced about the same in the upper $30k's!
  • Did I miss anything? Besides bringing my camera?

Meeting adjourned 7:30pm.

Knitting With Friends

I am so happy that my Monday nights will continue to be shared with friends and knitting. Our long time instructor and mentor recently succumbed to cancer. Our challenge is to continue to create stunning knitted projects and solve our own knitting problems. Robin the wine we enjoyed last week is a malbec from Argentina called Colores Del Sol.

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

Week 2

Food

  • Humus! Kath brought humus from a store in Mystic that is sooooooo good! We all try to figure out what it is that makes it soooooo good but cannot seem to put our finger on it. Kath....what is the name of the store that sells it? I forgot! I wish we could duplicate it, but then they would never be able to sell any. She also brought their own ships which wee so light and tasty.
  • Margi had some sweet chocolate covered pretzels, I scored one for the road. Ate so much humus that I had no interest in having left over white bean chili for dinner!
  • JoAnn brought the wine. It was red and should have looked at the label more closely, I caught the word "sol", it was very good! Maybe she can remember and post it.

Knit Projects

  • JoAnn is working on her shawl, love the color. Picture posted to the right.
  • Margi working on her magic loop "red sock" stocking for her daughter's boy friend. Picture posted also to the right. I am sure she will have it done by next week and on to something else!
  • Kathleen cranking on the Einstein Sweater for herself in chocolate brown. Picture posted to the right.
  • Lisa was MIA, touring colleges with her son. She is still working on her sweater, hopefully picture will be taken next week.
  • I(Robin) have 95% of my daughter's sweater done(as shown to the right), just need to weave the ends in and sew on the four buttons. I will post the finished project on my daughter for next week. I started the Einstein sweater for my daughter, already having to reduce the needles size to get within gauge.

Topics Talked About

  • A week does not go by without talking about the New York Yankees. A-Rod or as Margi calls him Dora (A-Rod spelled backwards, pretty clever). Then Robertson getting the WWF belt by Jeter....love him! Me of course complaining that I have a week of NO baseball....minus the Rockies game of course. Umpiring touched upon on how bad it has been.....the Melky call was no exception, it was fair and called foul. Oh well...it all evens out.
  • Margi gave a nice review of the Magic Loop technique she learned at YDU via Sheila. I have taken a few classes on it to make mittens and socks and it is much better than using double points. Of course I have forgotten the basics since it has been over a year. Margi enjoyed the new technique and gave some great tips on a few things she learned. Using a post-it note to follow along the pattern was one and the other on how to wind a ball of yarn to make a pull string center, very cool.
  • JoAnn brought up a site she learned of call Ravelry. When I had started my other blog over a year ago, I had stumbled upon this sit and you had to put on a waiting list to get in and use it. Got in and never used it to it's full potential. Now I feel I have to go back ad take a look at it again. It is a knit and crochet community with a lot to offer.
  • Stitches East was brought up again being held in Hartford, CT October 23-25. Most of us had an interest but had something else going on during that weekend. JoAnn may go, and leave her wallet at home!
  • Did I miss anything? Field trip to a yarn warehouse?
  • Meeting done at 7:35pm.

Our First Recap, Week One

We meet as a group every Monday night from 6-7:30pm. I am going to work on a format so here is a start.

FOOD
  • Always important, the food! Lisa brought some new cheese for us to try. One was a tomato chipolte and another a strawberry Chardonnay. Not bad. Margi provided some desserts that were cookies and biscotti.
  • Kath brought the alcohol which was Pinot Noir, Pepperwood. Of course the question came up on what movie made Pinot Noir even more known. Do you know? Margi had some super good cider, not spiked. I (Robin) needed some before I was off to two meetings after the class.

Knit Projects

  • Never got to see what Margi was working on. She is know for whipping out the projects in a week and coming up with some new cool item! Last week it was a winter hat with a hole in the top for a pony tail!
  • Kathleen was starting the Einstein sweater for her. Hopefully will get some pics of that. She was finishing a three quarter sleeve sweater last week and had to have it put together. Maybe we will post that picture next week.
  • Lisa is knitting a very cool sweater with a little back vent and some great variegated color yarn, green of course. Seems to be the color she migrates toward.
  • Joanne is knitting another shawl is not your basic shawl. It is a little fancier and has a nice knitted hole to gather it in. And I love the color of it which is plum.
  • I(Robin) promised I would finish my daughter's sweater I have been working on for over a year. It is a smock coat style and seems like I am working on tooth picks, size 4 needles! I will have it done for next week and post a picture. I had to rip out the two front panels due to too loose, it is looking good now.

Topics talked about

  • Just so you know, three of us are NY Yankee fans so this seems to come up first. Who should the Yankees play for Game One of the Post Season. Sunday's game was a quick topic of A-Rod.
  • I think I am going to post some yarn shops on the sidebar which we frequent. Margi is taking a Magic Loop stocking class at Yarns Down Under.
  • Katie Couric vs. Mcneil Lear News Hour......I think we do not need to point out which is better. Lisa like Inside Edition.....seemed to be the only one!
  • I had to go to a Nursery School Board Meeting than a campaign meeting afterward, crazy night!
  • We all seemed to state we did not need to buy more yarn and wanted to finish current projects. I already broke that statement! Bought some yarn at OSJL, bulky multi-colored at $1.50 a skein to make the Einstein Sweater for my daughter.

I left at 7:15pm.

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

Welcome everyone!

For about three years I have been meeting with a knitting group at a yarn shop in town. A few weeks ago, we lost our instructor to cancer. Several of the knitters have known her for many years and we decided to continue meeting as a group, carrying on her legacy. Strange how this is a reflection of the book published a few years ago.
What will the posts be about? It will be not only what we are working on, what we have finished(which seems to be a challenge for a few of us), but also what we eat, drink and talk about as a group! Basically a recap of our Monday night meeting.
I am hoping several of us will go on and add to the posts and the blog will develop. We look forward to seeing comments and would love to hear from you!
